Frequently Asked Questions

Many of your products are in liquid form. Why?

Liquid extracts are more easily absorbed in the digestive tract. Bulk herbs must first be broken down to extract the active ingredients from the herb, which can then be absorbed from the digestive tract into the body. Humans do not have the enzymes that breakdown the plant cell walls, thus we can only obtain a small quantity of the active ingredients if we have to digest the raw herbs. Liquid extracts contain larger quantities of active medicinal compounds than other preparations. The process of manufacturing powdered extracts is very expensive. Thus the amount of active compound placed into a capsule may not contain the same amount of active ingredients as a liquid preparation. Lastly, liquid preparation methods have been well tested over centuries. In all societies medicinal herbs were usually prepared as a liquid preparation. The history of the effectiveness of the herbs is based on liquid herbal preparations.

Why do you not manufacture tablets? Aren't they better than capsules?

Not really. It is a well known fact that many people are deficient in their ability to secrete hydrochloric acid in the stomach. In cases such as these, tablets may not dissolve completely and hence may not be absorbed completely. Capsules on the other hand are made of gelatin which dissolves completely in water and are not dependent on stomach acid content. On average approximately 40% of a tablet may be comprised of binding material. In capsules, binders are not needed so that 100% of the interior of the capsule can be used to hold active ingredients. In the production of tablets a lot of heat is generated as a byproduct of the tabletting process. This heat can potentially damage the finished product. For this reason products such as probiotics should never be tabletted. In the encapsulation process heat production is usually not an issue.

But I don't like to taste these herbal liquids. What can I do to make them taste better?

Many liquid herbal preparations at first do not taste good. However, your taste buds adjust quite quickly to the taste. (For example, there are very few people who enjoy the taste of beer the very first time it is tried. With time and repeated exposure these same individuals often come to crave the taste of beer.) One can mask the taste of liquid herbal preparations by adding them to fruit juice such as apple juice. Dilution is not an issue because the dosage of the liquid herbal preparation consumed remains the same whether it is diluted. Try adding any liquid extract to about a ¼ cup of your favourite juice; drink it, then follow with more juice and you will find that liquid extracts are not that bad AND you will be assured to absorb more of the active ingredients.

We often get asked why there are so many ingredients in our products and the purpose.

Let’s take Liver Flush as an example, why is it better than just using straight Milk Thistle? Products based on formulations are usually more effective than single ingredient products for the following reasons:

In order for a single herb product to work you must have a large enough quantity of the active compound/s within the herb to produce the required effect. In many cases the quantity of the active compounds in the herb varies according many factors e.g. where the herb is grown, the soil conditions, the weather conditions etc. To illustrate this point, it is well known that in the production of wine, the flavour of the grape changes from year to year and is also dependent on where the grape is grown (eg A merlot grape grown in BC will produce a wine which has a different flavour from one that is grown in Ontario). The same issues apply to medicinal herbs. Since the quantity of active compounds found in a single herb changes from year to year it is quite conceivable that the efficacy will have great variation. On the other hand if we use a formula (herbal combination) the chances of all of the herbs in the combination having lower amounts of the active is relatively small so from batch to batch we do not expect great changes in the efficacy of the product.

Different herbs have active compounds that affect the body via different physiological mechanisms. Therefore when you use a formula you can have a multiplicative effect in efficacy i.e. the herbs have a synergistic effect with each other producing an effect greater than the effects of the individual herb.

If an animal were to have a reaction to a given herb the severity of the reaction will depend on the quantity of the given herb. In products containing a herbal combination each individual herb is in lower quantities thereby minimizing any side effects.

In many cases herbal formulations include herbs that negate the side effects of other herbs. This cannot occur in single herb products. In addition, in many herbal formulations some herbs in the formula are present to enhance the absorption of the active herbs thereby producing a product with superior efficacy.
